Familiarize yourself with SIU Online basics.
D2L
D2L is SIU’s Learning Management System. Your syllabus and assignments are there. So are lectures and discussion boards. You can check your grades there. And your quizzes and exams are there, too. D2L has it all.
Your specific course materials are in course shells. As you register for classes, you’ll gain access to the relevant course shell.
Lectures
You have two options – real time (synchronous) or video-capture (asynchronous). You can switch between options any time.
Discussions
Discussions can happen in real time, or on a board. Your syllabus will have information about discussion requirements.
Textbooks
Your syllabus will include textbook information. You should check it as soon as you have access to give yourself time to get your books. Many online students find textbooks on Amazon, or on used textbook exchange such as BookMooch or student2student.
Exams
SIU faculty have flexibility in establishing online exam protocols. Some exams are taken online with video monitoring. Students who live near campus may use on-campus test proctoring services. Testing services can help students who are not near Carbondale locate an appropriate proctor and locations.
